  • Harkham Hillel Hebrew Academy was founded in 1948. Our school started with a handful of students in the basement of Beth Jacob Congregation and is currently over five hundred students strong. Hillel offers a comprehensive program that exceeds standards of excellence in all subjects including: Technology, Math, English, Science, Social Studies, Judaic Studies, and Hebrew Language.
  • Hillel is the ONLY Orthodox Early Childhood School in Los Angeles to receive NAEYC accreditation. The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) has worked to raise the quality of programs for all children from birth through age eight. A major part of NAEYC's efforts is to improve early childhood education through accreditation of programs that are committed to meeting national standards of quality. NAEYC accreditation represents the mark of quality in early childhood education.
  • Our school is accredited beyond State standards. In addition to our NAEYC accreditation, our school is accredited by the California Association of Independent School (CAIS). CAIS is a non-profit organization that serves and strengthens its schools by setting standards of academic quality and ethical conduct, by providing for the professional growth of faculty, administrators, and trustees, and by promoting ethnic and socio-economic diversity. We are also proud members of the Bureau of Jewish Education of Greater Los Angeles (BJE), and the Jim Joseph Foundation.
  • Our faculty is dedicated to life long learning. In addition to years of teaching experience, all of our General Studies educators at Hillel are accredited beyond State standards. Over half of our faculty has Masters or other post-graduate degrees. Hillel staff is encouraged to continue their professional development and provides learning opportunities throughout the year.
  • Gender equality in Judaic studies is a focal point at Hillel. All boys and girls at Hillel study Mishnah in 4th through 6th grade. All boys and girls at Hillel study Talmud in 7th and 8th grade. The 8th grade Judaic classes are held in our Beit Midrash. Research studies continuously show that boys and girls learn differently and benefit from single gender classrooms. At Hillel, boys and girls learn separately beginning in the 4th grade. As a complement to single gender classrooms, co-educational interactions continue at the school through field trips, chesed activities, lunch, recess, and extra curricular activities.
  • At Hillel, educating our students using cutting-edge technology is a priority. All pre-1 through 8th grade classrooms are equipped with Smartboards (electronic whiteboards). This interactive teaching tool engages our students in active learning. In addition, we have three science labs, and the resources to publish a school newspaper on par in format and genre with that of College campus newspapers.
  • At Hillel, every student gets the attention he or she deserves. We strive to maintain small classes in order to ensure every child gets the attention he or she needs. Our ECC has a ratio of 1:4 through 1:9 depending on the class/ age of the children. Our ratio of students-to-teachers never drops below 1:10 from pre-1st through 4th grade. On average there are no more than 18 students per class. Hillel offers a Gifted and Talented Program, as well as a Resource Program to meet individual needs.
  • Enrichment is part of our on-going program. Hillel offers a comprehensive physical education program, music, art, science, and computers. We also offer the STAR after-school enrichment program. Hillel offers students the opportunity to participate in Jewish Day School leagues, comprised of schools from the spectrum of Jewish life. There are after-school programs in: Basketball, Softball, Volleyball, Track, and Soccer. We offer Mishmar and Homework Club as well.
  • Our campus is always growing, expanding and planning for the future. Hillel is currently actively engaged in plans to upgrade our three science labs, as well as to construct a state-of-the-art Health and Fitness Center to include dance studios, a weight room, and a multi-purpose room with a retractable stage for student performances. Plans are also underway to renovate classrooms under the eco-friendly LEED Green Building Rating System.
  • Your child's safety and well being are of the utmost importance to us. Safety is a top priority at Hillel. We have professional security guards patrolling the school grounds and monitoring carpooling at all times. Our grounds are completely enclosed and gated. Our building is equipped with security cameras as well. We have a three days' supply of food, water and medical supplies in case of a disaster. Each classroom has an emergency backpack. Our staff members are trained in First aid and CPR. We have a school nurse on site. In case of emergency, we are located close to Cedars Sinai Medical Center.
  • Hillel parents can get involved in many ways at school. Parents are encouraged to get involved in many ways, including: Taking an active role in our Parent Teacher Association (PTA), serving on various committees, becoming room parents and parent liaison, and volunteering to help with class projects, fundraising, and in the library. Because we offer a rigorous dual General Studies and Judaic Studies program, we ask parents to partner with us by supervising homework, making trips to library when necessary and keeping in close contact with the school regarding their child's progress so we may be mutually supportive of each child's needs.
  • A Hillel family identifies with the school's goals and philosophy. These goals and our philosophy are published in our Annual Report and Parent Manuals. Our families are committed to supporting the educational mission of our school, and view our work as a true home-school partnership, where working together, we create an environment conducive to achieving excellence. Families admitted to our school must respect Shabbat, mainstream Halacha, and the laws of Kashrut.
