Week of May 21-25, 2012
Begin studying for the test on Chapter 17.  It is scheduled for May 30, 2012 for all classes.  Study guides will be passed out in class on Tuesday, May 22nd.  You will need your notes, vocabulary, and textbook to prepare.
 
Since this is our last test of the year, students should bring back their text books to school on Wednesday, May 30th also.  While there will be graded assignments, use of the textbook will no longer be necessary after May 30th.

Week of May 14-18, 2012
REMINDER:   Please bring a bagged lunch for our trip to the Long Beach Aquarium on Monday, May 14th!

Girls need to turn in the homework from last week on Tuesday, May 15th. 

Due to ERB testing, there is no other homework assigned for this week.  Get plenty of rest and remember to eat a good breakfast!

Week of May 7-11, 2012
Students will have a "Discussing the Text" worksheet for Chapter 17.1, pages 393-399 due soon.  The boys classes have their assignment due on Thursday, May 10th and the girls need to turn it in on Tuesday, May 15th.

If you have not already turned in a field trip waiver for the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific it must be turned in as soon as possible.  You cannot attend without turning it in.  Don't forget to pack a lunch for the trip on Monday, May 14th!

Week of April 30-May 4, 2012
The Marine Animal research worksheet is due on Wednesday, May 2nd. You should complete this research using the internet or books.  Also, permission slips for the Long Beach Aquarium are due on Wednesday, May 2nd as well.

For the girls' class, the Cornell notes on Chapter 15.4 are due on Monday, April 30th.


Week of April 23-27, 2012
Due to last week's assembly, the quiz on 15.4 for the girls class has been postponed until Tuesday, April 24th.  They will be allowed to use the notes taken with the Cornell notes system during the quiz.  No other notes will be permitted.

Students will be assigned a Marine Animal to research this week.  This assignment is to be done with a partner and will be due on Wednesday, May 2nd.  This information will then be used to make short presentations at the Long Beach Aquarium during the field trip on Monday, May 14th.

I am expecting to have an updated progress report for parent review on Tuesday, April 24th.  Please complete any work that hasn't been turned in by May 11th.  Progress reports need to be signed and returned the next day for participation credit.
 
Week of April 16-20, 2012
Students who do not finish taking their notes on pages 356-360 in the Cornell note system on Wednesday need to finish them for homework.  There will be quiz on these pages on Thursday, April 19th.  You will be allowed to use the notes taken with the Cornell note system during the quiz so make sure your notes are thorough!

April 2-3, 2012
"Reading the Text" worksheet on pages 345-349 is due on Tuesday, April 2nd for all classes.

Week of March 26-30, 2012
This week's homework will be given on Thursday and will be a "Reading the Text" assignment on pages 345-349.  The homework will be due on Tuesday, April 2nd.  Please ask your 6th grader how he/she did on last week's test on Chapters 9 & 10.

Week of March 19-23, 2012
Students should be preparing for the Chapter 9 & 10 Test this week.  The test for the boys is scheduled for Wednesday, March 21, 2012 and the test for the girls is Thursday, March 22, 2012.
Use the study guide given to you in class or the copy of it below.
                                   
Chapters 9 & 10 Study Guide
Please study the following information in order to prepare for the test on chapters 9 & 10.
1.Memorize the 5 characteristics that define something as a mineral. See chapter 9.1. Be able to use the characteristics to describe why something is or is not a mineral.
2.Memorize the 6 properties that help geologists identify a mineral. Also, know what each property means. See chapter 9.2.
3.Know how to use Moh's Scale of Hardness, including how different tools are used to check for increasing levels of mineral hardness.
4.Know what the 2 special properties of minerals are and how it effects the minerals that have these properties.
5.Know how igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary rocks are formed.
6.Know the difference between intrusive and extrusive igneous rock and other names for each type.
7.Know how to further classify sedimentary and metamorphic rock.
8.Know the steps in the process of creating a sedimentary rock.
9.Be able to name at least 4 common mineral types and explain how each is used by people.
10.Study your outline notes and vocabulary to be completely prepared.


Week of March 12-16, 2012

"Reading the Text" worksheet on Chapter 10.1 is due on Monday, March 12 for all classes."Reading the Text" worksheet on Chapter 10.3 is due on Friday, March 16 for all classes.Begin preparing for the upcoming science test on chapters 9 & 10.  The test is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, March 21st for the boys' classes and Thursday, March 22nd for the girls' class.

Complete the "Reading the Text" worksheet on Chapter 10.1 of your textbook.   Remember that you can choose any questions for a total of 12 points to complete the worksheet.  This assignment is due on Wednesday, March 7th for the boys' classes and Monday, March 12th for the girls' class.

Week of February 27-March 2, 2012
My congratulations to the 6th grade on doing a fantastic job on your first ever Science/Torah fair!  You made me proud.  There is no homework in science this week since we are attending camp from Monday-Wednesday.  Please remember to meet in the Doheny lobby at 7:45am on Monday morning.  We expect to be back to school some time around 4pm on Wednesday.  Phone calls will be made to let parents know about safe arrivals to Pali and our estimated time of return once we are close to the school on Wednesday. 

Week of February 20-24, 2012
Complete your corrections for both your background research and experiment write-up for the Science/Torah fair by Wednesday, February 22, 2012.  You also need to complete your display board and have it in by the morning of the 22nd so that you have it for set-up and grading time.  Don't forget to be present at the Science/Torah fair from 6-7:30pm, attendance will be taken at 6pm.  You must be at your display board from 6:30-7:30 to discuss your experiment with visitors.**PLEASE NOTE:  Your experiment write-up and display board should contain a Future Studies section.  This portion of the assignment was discussed in class, but did not copy and paste into last week's homework notice correctly.**

Week of February 13-17, 2012
Experiment write ups are due on Wednesday, February 15, 2012.  This portion of the Science?Torah Fair should be typed!  Please be sure to include all the elements we discussed in class and listed below:
1.)    Title of Experiment
2.)    Purpose: Why you chose the experiment you did out of all possible experiments?
3.)    Hypothesis: Prediction of what you think will happen and why. This should be done before you start!
4.)    Materials: List everything you used.
5.)    Methods: Your step-by-step directions.
6.)    Variables: Just list the independent and dependent variables. See packet for explanations. 7.)    Results: Your graphs, tables, and written observations. (You may not need tables but should must include at least 1 graph and written observations about what happened.
8.)    Conclusion: What did you learn from doing the experiment? Was your hypothesis correct? Why/why not?
9.) Future Studies:  What experiment could you perform in the future that relates to your results or current experiment?

The Science/Torah fair background report is due on Tuesday, February 7th.  Please use the handout given to you in class as a guideline for the report's setup.  On the back of the guideline you can also find the rubric used to grade it.Week of January 30-February 3, 2012You should be using your time this week to finish up your background research report for the Science/Torah fair.  It is due on Tuesday, February 7, 2012.  Please use the handout given in class as a guideline.

The worksheet based on discussing the text for pages 144-149 is due on Tuesday, January 17th.  Choose up to 12 points to answer the discussion points.There will be an open book Test on Chapter 6.1 and all of Chapter 7 on Thursday, January 19th.  Please look over the chapters for review along with your notes so that questions can be answered in advance of the test.

Week of January 9-13, 2012
Science experiment proposals for the Science/Torah fair are due on Monday, January 9th.Once your experiment has been approved, you should begin gathering resources to research your topic based on its scientific concepts. There will be an open book Test on Chapter 6.1 and all of Chapter 7 on Thursday, January 19th.  Please look over the chapters for review along with your notes so that questions can be answered in advance of the test.

Week of January 2-6, 2012
Students should be deciding on which experiment they will complete for the Science/Torah fair.  In class last week, they were given detailed packets about what is expected of them.  Experiments that will be approved will be able to answer a question and produce numerical data or data that can be represented by a numerical scale  (see packet for further explanation of this).  Though science proposals are due on January 9, 2012 students are encouraged to submit their ideas as soon as possible since only one idea per student will be admitted.  Once given approval, students should begin researching science topics related to the experiment.Also, there will be an open book/ open note test coming up on Chapters 6 & 7.  The announcement for its date will be made some time late next week.
